Starlight and Seeing

On the instant before perception becomes a name, and the ripple that remains after direct experience passes.

A tiny particle of light departs a star.

It travels unperturbed across vast distances and time – through silence, through emptiness, through nothing that would call itself a witness – until it ceases at the surface of a cone within the eye.

And there, a transformation begins.

Photon becomes signal. Signal becomes impulse. Impulse ripples outward like a drop of water striking a still lake – through nerve, through brain, through the quiet machinery of perception – until form becomes thought, cognition, recognition.

Until I finally conceptualize: star.

But when was it, exactly, that this became a star?

There must have been a moment just before – before the name arrived, before the concept settled over experience like a veil. A moment of pure seeing. Perception without contamination. Form without label.

Like infant eyes encountering light for the first time. No stars, no sky, no distance. Just this.

What is real are the manifestations in the present moment. The interactions, the cause, the effect – arising and already passing.

What is illusion is the concept layered after. The memory replaying what was imprinted in the mind-consciousness store. The name given to what the eyes saw but can never fully describe.

Concepts and notions will never reach the true and ultimate essence of a thing. That essence is only touched through direct experience, in the very moment of contact.

Only when eating the mango – at that very moment, tongue meeting flesh, sweetness flooding awareness – can we experience and understand reality in all its glory.

Not the idea of the mango. Not the memory. Not the word.

The mango itself. Now.

The moment has passed. It is already gone.

What remains is just the ripple.
